Let this page here be your map—or compass—as to how to build your sleep-health knowledge to address the puzzling problems of lost sleep.

The Puzzle of Sleep.

When one goes to put together a jigsaw puzzle there may be pieces everywhere and it may seem overwhelming at first. Generally first one starts with looking at the box—allowing them to see what sleep is supposed to look like. Before learning how to improve or “fix” your sleep, one has to understand the basics of a normal night’s sleep.

If you are a reader, a literary learner, then begin with What is Normal Sleep?

If you find it easier to learn through video then first view Normal Sleep on YouTube.

Sleep Borders.

Once one is able to see what the puzzle is suppose to look like, then one commonly starts to separate the pieces of the puzzle that form the borders.

Part of the border pieces of sleep is understanding what makes a person sleepy and what occurs during wake. This can be viewed on YouTube on Understanding Sleep Drive.

Next in solving a puzzle you start to put pieces of the borders together, noting that some parts go on the top border, some on the bottom, and some form the side borders. Understanding age related changes in sleep allows one to understand how sleep should be for their age group. This can be viewed on Sleep Over The Ages.

Now that you have the borders together, one option is to randomly try to jam pieces of the puzzle together until you find a fit. Another option is to find patterns, such as colors. You may find that some colors seem to go together, and there may be some pieces that obviously don’t belong in a group—abnormals.

If there is concern for snoring there may be sleep apnea, and more can be learned about that on the Sleep Apnea video. If there are uncomfortable sensations in your legs or frequent leg movements at night, more can be learned about RLS with the Restless Legs video. If you feel that often find yourself tired even though you slept well, then there may be a disorder of sleepiness that you may benefit from the Narcolepsy video. Or you may feel as if you’re internal clock may be different than that of society, and that may be the case and you can read about that in Circadian Sleep Disorders.

Now you have the borders put together and the pieces organized into the sections they are likely to go into. You have this “big picture” put together, yet it is still a puzzle. That is what insomnia is like at times, and to learn more about insomnia the Insomnia video can be helpful.

Caveart Superbowl SpearNow you’re ready to put some pieces of the puzzle together. This is where it is helpful to know that part of the reason insomnia is so common is because we come from cavemen. You can read more about this on Caveman Insomnia.

There are several different sections of the puzzle, and you try to take one section at a time. Starting to work on the puzzle is like starting to treat, more can be learned about this on Treating Insomnia.

MM PS Sleep Hygiene eyesOne thing you may notice about the puzzle of insomnia is that some pieces blend between sections. Behavioral Sleep Medicine (BSM) has concepts that indeed have fussion. Different sections of BSM with fusion include Stimulus Control, Sleep Restriction, Cognitive Approach to Insomnia, Sleep Hygiene, and Relaxation Therapy.

Stimulus Control and Sleep Restriction I find to be the core and keystone to Mindfulnessinsomnia management. If you found the Cognitive Approach to Insomnia interesting then you may want to learn more about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia. Or you may have remembered from my book The Sleep Diet that I stated “sleep hygiene is crap”. If you haven’t and this sparks your interest you may want to read The Sleep Diet. The relaxation therapy aspect is equally crucial, of which Mindfulness and Sleep has been helpful for me.

MM PS HandsIt may be hard to put finer pieces of the puzzle together if your hands are shaky. Sometimes with our mind is shaky and anxious, it’s hard to sleep as well. Sleep and Anxiety.

Blow bubbles to sleep.

Blow bubbles to sleep.

Building a puzzle is a form of play, like blowing bubbles. And you may actually find it helpful to blow bubbles to sleep. Seriously! Read about it on Blowing Bubbles to Sleep. And if you find it difficult to explain to others then have them watch a video on the Mind Blowing Science.

Now the puzzle is put together. However this won’t be the last time that you put that puzzle together. Who has a puzzle that you’ve only put together just once? The more you practice putting a puzzle together… the better you get at it. And the more one practices clearing the mind… the better you get at it. I find these Mindfulness Links in particularly valuable for practice.

Sleep swell… my friends!Peaceful sleep
