Effects of Sleep Deprivation

When adults are sleepy they yawn. When a child is sleepy they tantrum. But adult or child general processes occur with sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation has systemic effects. It can range from more permanent and serious effects leading to cognitive impairment and an inflammatory state that effects your immune system and metabolic function. Sleep deprivation and sleep fragmentation has been shown to affect the frontal lobe on functional MRI studies.

Children who are sleep deprived rarely show actual symptoms of sleepiness, but rather paradoxical hyperactivity trying to keep them awake or with problems with sustaining focused attention.

Adults may have feelings of EDS (Excessive Daytime Sleepiness), however can have cognitive concerns.

On a more serious note, driving while sleep deprived, on driving simulation tests, have been found to be more dangerous then driving under the influence of alcohol! And further more, driving while sleep deprived and under the influence of alcohol have been shown to be further dangerous.
