Insomnia

What is Insomnia?

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) states: Insomnia is defined as the subjective perception of difficulty with sleep initiation, duration, consolidation, or quality that occurs despite adequate opportunity for sleep, and that results in some form of daytime impairment. — That’s a long definition. In simple terms, Insomnia is difficulty sleeping despite trying to sleep.

90% of insomnia is associated with another condition!

One thing that is not frequently realized, is that only 10% of Insomnia is “Primary”, which means that onset is during infancy or childhood, there is no identifiable cause, and the insomnia is persistent without periods of remission. That means that 90% of insomnia is “Comorbid”, meaning that it is either associated with another medical/psychological condition, if not directly attributed to it.

I do not view insomnia as a night disorder. Things happen all day long that lead to insomnia and if you sleep poorly there are consequences all next day. I view insomnia as 24 hour disorder.  And this is part of the reason why I do not use sleep medications as my first line treatment for insomnia, because it only works at night.
