Sleep & Anxiety

Sleep and Anxiety

Anxiety can cause poor sleep, just as poor sleep can contribute to anxiety.

You may say sleep and anxiety/panic are not compatible. Have you ever had a dream that you fell or missed a step and woke up to a startle body jerk? I bet you never finished that dream where your head cracks from the fall and you go to the ER. Dramatic? Yes, but point is that such fear frequently leads to wake brain rhythms.

Commonly treating the anxiety can lead to improved sleep. But it should be noted the opposite is equally true. Many studies have shown that if someone has anxiety and sleep problems, when you treat the sleep disorder the symptoms of anxiety scores go down lower then if you treat the anxiety only.

Combination therapy of Non-Benzodiazepine Hypnotic with treatment of Mood Disorder has very well established safety and efficacy – In both helping sleep symptoms AND helping the symptoms of the mood disorder.

This is not unique to anxiety, but rather it has been shown in many disorders that treating sleep disorders improves scores of other comorbid (associated) disorders. Treating sleep has been shown to help improve depression, pain, anxiety, and ADHD symptoms.
