WASO The Owl

The true star of Paradise Sleep Children’s Books Series is WASO the owl.

WASO (Wake After Sleep Onset). This is what parents complain about most. Parents commonly eventually get their kids to sleep, but they wake up and come back to parents room, do things around the house, etc… This is why WASO is a little owl, WASO’s goal is to teach children to self-soothe and self-regulate so the amount of time spent awake after sleep onset is “little”.

WASO isn’t blue because he is a boy. WASO is the color of dawn. The night sky black. The morning light is sky-blue. But there is transition in dawn around 4am where the night dark sky starts to get a mystical blue. That also happens to be the period of time where there are most awakenings because it is past the Deep Slow Wave Sleep period. That happens to be the time where many kids experience wake after sleep onset.

WASO has a friend that is a dog named Agie. Agie is short for Agrypnia. Agrypnia is a medieval Scottish term for insomnia. Agrypnia was a time of staying up late before a holiday or festival, but then turned into a pathologic term in the 1800’s. Agie used to bark at night when he would hear sounds and this would wake children up. Sounds like rain, thunder, footsteps used to startle Agie awake. However WASO taught Agie mindfulness of sounds and Agie now is able to use routine sounds to soothe him to sleep like white noise.

WASO has another friend called Norm Wak the Yak. NWAK (Number of Wakenings). Waking up at night is normal, and normal NWAK is 4-6 times in an evening. Common parent frustration is that a child wakes up 4 times a night and is up all night. The NWAK is normal. What can be modified are techniques such as body scan, progressive muscle relaxation, following your breath, etc… to reduce the WASO

When WASO is not playing with children at The Magic Ice Cream Palace, he likes to spend time in The Candy Kingdom. In order to enter the The Candy Kingdom one must enter through the gates of the Majestic Chocolate Mountain. The chocolate mountains are truly majestic as whenever a child smiles before bedtime the mountains rise taller and taller. Did you know that the SOLAR energy from the Candy Kingdom melts the chocolate and makes a river that flows all the way to The Magic Ice Cream Palace? And WASO loves to teach children how to use SOLAR… Stop. Observe your thoughts without judgment. Let the thought go without engaging in it. And Return your attention to your relaxation response.

Dr. Jose, We may have met last year at the ASBA conference. I just found your flyer on my desk (New Year’s cleaning….) and it mentioned a free pdf sample of your books. I deal with pediatric sleep from a form and function perspective and love to educate the parents.
